Kanun or Qanun is a stringed musical instrument, which is played with two index fingers equipped with two picks. Kanun is used in the music of several countries such as the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, and southeastern regions of Europe. As time passed, each country has changed and developed its unique model. Every state has a new version of kanun that suits their musical tunes and chords.

The kanun is a trapezoid-shaped box, and Its body is made of wood and the soundboard half of wood and half of usually fish skin. The total number of strings varies from 64 to 84 but is usually 24 strings in triple with a range of three octaves. The strings are made of gut or nylon, however, in India, they are, at times, made from metal. The pitch can easily be raised or lowered while playing through levers. Kanun is suitable for both solo performances and ensembles.
